There are a few different ways to immigrate overseas with a variety of factors coming into place as to who qualifies. For us, we opted for the skilled worker visa route thanks to Britt’s career in technologoy and regular speaking opportunities. Education is another popular path with many ex-pats emigrating from the US for university programs, typically post-grad, which usually provides a visa during the approved program. Some individuals and families may also qualify for asylum depending on their origin country, any special circumstances and/or dangers, and which country they’re immigrating to.

We did! A lot of countries welcome cats, dogs, and certain other species as long as certain requirements are met. For example, in the U.K., we were able to bring up to five furry companions without needing any type of official licensing, like a kennel license. However, there are breed restrictions in the U.K. that we had to consider as well as complete all the required pre-travel vaccinations and treatments, which had to be filed in a specific way. Additionally, we weren’t allowed to fly into the country with pets in-cabin, and since we have seniors, we opted to fly into France instead and drive into the U.K., which comes with it’s own set of rules. Essentially, it’s possible, but there are a lot of factors to consider when selecting a country you’d like to relocate to and live long-term.

It’s expensive! There are a variety of factors that contribute to the overall costs, but it’s possibly to do it in a budget-savvy manner. However, budget doesn’t equal cheap! The visa process alone can easily cost a $1,000+.

It’s important to research the country and ensure there are legal protections in place, such as marriage equality. Additionally, look into first-person accounts of people living there or who have lived there to understand if there are any areas or cultures where homophobia, lesbophobia, or misogyny are common.
