Delicious food? ✓ Breathtaking landscapes? ✓ Gay friendly? ✓ There are few places safer for lesbian and sapphic travelers than Iceland, and in fact, the country regularly competes for the top spots of global LGBTQIA+ equality and safety rankings. For 2025, Iceland even earned the third spot on ILGA-Europe’s Rainbow Map, making it a popular spot for the community to visit and explore.

If you’re a lesbian or sapphic traveler heading to queer-friendly Reykjavík, here are some of the top spots and events to catch on your journey.

Must-See Queer Landmarks in Reykjavík

Skólavörðustígur Rainbow Road

What screams “gay-friendly” more than a rainbow flag? Try a rainbow road. Skólavörðustígur is Iceland’s very own rainbow-painted pedestrian street in Downtown Reykjavik.  Not only is the landmark a great photo op, but it’s also lined with local cafes, shops, and galleries, making it an ideal spot to begin your exploration of the city.

Kíkí Queer Bar

If you’re up for some drinks and dancing, Kíkí Queer Bar is the go-to nightlife location for the queer community in Reykjavik. It’s technically the only gay bar in the city, so it can get busy quickly, populated with both locals and tourists. Find it by heading to the city center and looking for the rainbow-painted exterior on Laugavegur.

Queer Events in Iceland

Reykjavik Pride

While there may not be an abundance of LGBTQ+ events in Iceland, the annual Reykjavik Pride makes up for it by going big. The annual queer celebration boasts around 100,000 attendees, from across the island as well as the world. Throughout the week, there are a range of events, from tour groups and quizzes to karaoke and concerts, with the biggest draw being the epic Reykjavik Pride Parade.

Drag Shows & Open Mic Nights

There are also various drag shows and queer-themed karaoke and open-mic nights in Reykjavik. With different locations and organizations involved, it’s best to search for events specifically during your travel dates to find out what’s available when you’re around.

Queer-Friendly Reykjavik: A Must-See City for Lesbian & Sapphic Travelers

While statistics and awards don’t always translate to real-life vibes, I can verify that I’ve never experienced any type of harassment or mistreatment during our sapphic trips to Iceland. For that reason, I think most lesbian and sapphic travelers will find themselves at home in the land of fire and ice, but it’s still important to stay aware and use caution when out and about, even when visiting clubs and landmarks in or around queer-friendly Reykjavík.

Travel Guide: Iceland FAQs

The national language of Iceland is … * drumroll, please * … Icelandic. However, don’t let that second-guess your destination as nearly everyone speaks English, and most locals are completely fluent in it, often speaking it better than many of the people I know. (oooh, burn 🔥)

The more appropriate question is, “What isn’t there to do in Iceland?” A significant number of the visitors are drawn to the country for its otherworldly landscape, including waterfalls and glaciers. The natural hot springs and man-made lagoons are also incredibly popular, including the Blue Lagoon and Sky Lagoon.

Spring through fall is the most popular time to visit as temperatures stay fairly mild and precipitation is mostly manageable, but there are activities and sights available year-round. For example, the Northern Lights have a higher chance of being seen in Iceland from Fall to Spring.

Crime rates in Iceland are much lower than most other countries around the world. They average fewer than 2 homicides a year, which is incredibly low. For comparison, the state I grew up in the U.S., Missouri, averages 10 for every 100,000 people or 600 annually.

Compared to travel within the U.S., flying to Iceland is fairly affordable, although it does depend on where you’re flying from. For instance, from the U.S. to Iceland can easily run over a $1000+, while I’ve flown from London for around $200 per person. To find the best deals, I use flight comparison tools to identify the cheapest dates to fly, and then compare different airlines to find the best rates.

Since Iceland is a Schengen member, travelers from many countries don’t usually require a visa as long as they’re not staying for more than 90 days. The government offers an online tool to easily check if you need a visa to travel to Iceland or not.
